J. VERNE SMITH
HUMAN RESOURCES CENTER
OF GREER

The J. Verne Smith Human Resources Center of Greer is a testimony to what can be achieved by one caring state senator determined to bring much-needed services to his hometown constituents. Greer straddles the county line between Greenville and Spartanburg counties, and Greer residents without transportation to either city were, in effect, denied access to vital services. So the senator brought services to them! The result is an award-winning, prototypical facility with outreach representation from agencies and resources in Greenville and Spartanburg as well as an inspirational concept that is already being successfully replicated in other areas.

With the donation of two adjacent abandoned buildings in downtown Greer by the city of Greer and the challenge of a $50/Square Foot construction renovation budget, the 4,400 Square Foot Greer Human Resources Center was born and played to a full house almost from day one! In 1996 we completed an addition to our initial renovation that more than doubled the size of the facility to 10,000 square feet. Some of the services offered include: DSS, DHEC, OB/GYN Clinic, Greer Relief and Resources Agency, Commission for the Blind, Greer Literacy Partnership, Legal Services and Vocational Rehabilitation.
