RAWLINSON ROAD MIDDLE SCHOOL
Additions and Renovations
Contract under firm name MGFC Group, LLC)
Rawlinson Road Middle School was initially constructed in 1978 and has experienced several additions. The existing building was load bearing masonry with brick veneer, stucco accents and built up roof. To meet major facilities needs for the school, three separate additions were required for an Auditorium/Fine Arts Center; an Administrative Suite/Entrance Lobby expansion; and a Classroom Wing. Site traffic circulation had also become extremely problematic and was redesigned, employing directional graphics, to improve and better control the flow.
The Fine Arts Center comprises a 500 seat Auditorium with Entrance Lobby, Drama Classroom, Dressing Rooms, Gang Toilets, Prop Storage and General Storage Rooms. The auditorium is equipped with state of the art acoustics, sound system and lighting and the Entrance Lobby features a terrazzo patterned floor accented by striated walls of split face block and brick and indirect pendant lighting fixtures as well as extensive fenestration to introduce natural light. The expanded Administrative Suite includes a new Entrance Lobby with an Air Lock and Entrance Canopy plus controlled building access via the new Reception Area as well as Offices, a Conference Room and Storage Rooms. The Classroom Wing consists of 5 classrooms, a Reading Recovery Room, a Resource Room, an IT office and Equipment Room, a Teachers Workroom, Janitors Office, Gang Toilets and a large Custodial Storage Room.
Exterior materials were employed to match or complement those used on the additions and existing building and include split and ground face block, glass block, brick and aluminum storefront with insulated glazing. Computer, life safety and security systems were extended and updated.

McCARTHY TESZLER SCHOOL
Spartanburg, SC
The McCarthy Teszler School is dedicated to serving special needs students ages 3 through 21 and providing personal and educational development experiences commensurate with each student’s needs and abilities. The new facility was designed to accommodate preschool through twelfth grade students. An existing, adjacent building was expanded, renovated and connected to the new building to serve vocational program students.
The core of the building comprises support facilities including Administration, Health Clinic, Custodial, Food Service, Guidance and the Media Center as well as specialized educational programs such as Speech, Physical Education(PE), Physical Therapy (PT) and Occupational Therapy (OT). Five classroom wings contain the Art, Music, Autistic, Early Childhood, Emotionally Disabled, Orthopedically Disabled, Profoundly Disabled and Trainably Disabled Programs. A ceiling mounted, remote control student lift and transport system is employed in classroom wings and support areas that primarily serve physically disabled students. Community Multisensory Rooms, In School Suspension (ISS), Time Out (TO), Applied Behavioral Therapy Rooms (ABT) and Community Shower Rooms are dispersed throughout the facility as are Teacher Workrooms. The PE/PT/OT Complex also features a state of the art therapy pool with a variable speed treadmill floor that raises to deck height and underwater cameras with a viewing monitor built into the control console.
The vocational component comprises the Prevocational Skills Program with a Home Economics Lab and a Trades and Horticulture Lab; the Transition and Survival Skills Program; the Vocational Skills Program with Supervised Living and Work Labs; and the Vocational Prep program with Food Services (commercial kitchen), Horticulture, Service Industries (laundry) and Community Services (trades) Labs. Administrative accommodations include offices for the Vocational Coordinator, Social Worker and ISS/TO. Ancillary accommodations include a new 2660 SF greenhouse and two storage buildings.
Due to the highly specialized furniture and equipment required to serve this population and the additional square footage required to provide wheelchair access to the building elements, fixtures and furniture, each student space was designed from the “inside out.” By finalizing the preferred furniture and equipment layout first, and defining the limits of the respective spaces and their relativity afterwards, optimum access, circulation and spatial relationships, as well as plan economy, were achieved.
